DECISIONS.DECISIONS
If I’m honest, all I did was eat, sleep and dream about being a footballer. I left school at 16 with reasonable standard grades passes. I know I could have done better but you know what its like, another year of school doing higher grades or the lure of a football career. There was only going to be one choice! I signed for Hibernian F.C. full of optimism. Although I enjoyed it I had a fairly up and down time and it wasn’t going the way I’d hoped. Suppose that’s when a little reality kicks in! It probably sounds a little daft, especially when you’ve just turned 19, but I knew it would be hard getting another club. Some of my schoolmates were already into a university course others had started working.
I needed a fresh start but I wanted to keep playing. A sports scholarship ticked all the boxes, an opportunity to play on a full-time basis and study for a degree. Then you get to thinking:
- It was my first time living away from home, a new country, and different culture.
- Although I did day release when I was playing in the Hibernian F.C. Academy it was over two years since I’d been in full-time education. What about the standard of course work and will I cope? Plus I was didn’t really have any fixed ideas on what I’d like study
- Also what was the standard of football really like?
