The NCAA is a voluntary organisation that was established almost 100 years ago. It comprises of around 1200 intuitions, conferences and organisations that govern and look after the best interests, education and athletics participation of student athletes.  In 1973 the organisation split its membership into three divisions based on various academic and intuitional criteria.

Widely acknowledged for producing a competitive sporting environment, strict academic criteria is enforced with applicants having to meet eligibility requirements of the governing body as well as obtaining clearance through the NCCA Clearinghouse prior to acceptance and participation.
